This weekend the 89th PGA Championship is being played at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. During the third round of play, Sergio Garcia was disqualified from the tournament for having the incorrect score filled in on his scorecard on one of the holes. For those of you unfamiliar with the game of golf, golfers are not responsible for making their own scorecard. Each player’s playing partner is responsible for filling in the scorecard. So, in reality, Sergio Garcia’s playing partner Boo Weekley filled in the wrong score. This does not excuse Sergio; it is his responsibility to confirm the accuracy of the scorecard before he signs it at the end of the round. Having said that, I believe that disqualification is too strict a penalty for the offense committed. It was an innocent, careless mistake made by both Sergio Garcia and Boo Weekley. Why can’t the score simply be corrected, followed by a simple chastisement to both players regarding the importance of accuracy on the scorecard. In a sports world where cheating is rampant, it is ridiculous that a player should be disqualified for putting a wrong number in a box. Also, with new technology the television has implemented where every shot can be seen with Shotlink down to the inch, why do players even need to keep their own scorecards?

The chase is over. Henry Aaron is the no longer the all-time home run king, and the number 755 no longer means what it once did. On August 7th, 2007, the surly Barry Bonds hit a rocket over the wall in the deepest part of AT&T park. If the ball would have been pulled over the right field wall, the ball would have splashed into McCovey cove and legions of kayakers would have dove into the cove like fish clamoring for food at feeding time. Oddly enough, a 22-year old Mets fan by the name of Matt Murphy from Queens, New York was the recipient of the epic shot, and was escorted from the ballpark like the president during a security breach. So, without question, Barry Bonds has the greatest statistics of any position player in the history of baseball. (Babe Ruth’s cumulative stats are better but that was because the Babe was both a legendary hitter and pitcher.) Here are my top 5 pitchers and position players in the history of the game.
